Since we just moved here, I take every opportunity to explore the area. The photos are from the north bank of the Wairau river and up Pine Valley. I am starting to like this place more and more.
That's all within half an hour from our house.

Well, seeing that it was a fine autumn day today, we went for a drive up to Lake Chalice and beyond. It's only about 45 min form here, but a bit longer if you drive to the top.
Not far in we got stuck in traffic.
once clear we carried on up the mountain.
It's a pleasant drive
There are some nice views out to the valley.
Our house is somewhere down there. You can even see the ocean from here.
The scenery is constantly changing
Mushrooms are everywhere
You drive up to the Lake, but it's a walk down to actually get to it.
We keep going higher, towards Mt Patricarch
Yep, it's starting to get pretty high up.
Plants cling to the rock.
As we carry on the driver is being told off.
It's a bit hard to turn here.
The passenger is getting a bit nervous by now.
No pictures where the driver is getting a bit nervous. But hey, it's a long way down and we just had a storm and bad flooding.
It's was quite a nice afternoon, 4 hours all up. I think we got up to about 1400m Mt Patriarch is about 1650m. Next time I'll take the bike.
Hope you enjoyed the drive.
I almost forgot to add a picture of Mt Patriarch.

Well, this didn't take long. Went up again a few days later. A group of us went right to the top this time, on bikes. Won't bore you with a lot of text (I am lazy), just the essentials. The scenery was absolutely stunning, not a cloud in the sky. It was mildly challenging, mainly because if you got it wrong, there was a nice drop to consider. Here are a bunch of photos. According to the GPS we were at 1474 metres of altitude, not bad for not having to walk.
It's steepish in places.
From my house it was a 150km round trip. About 50km of gravel.

Not sure if there is still interest in my photos. I went up Mt Altimarloch today, it's neat being able to ride up to 1685 metres on a motorcycle, especially on a nearly cloudless day.

Thanks for the encouragement. It helps to know if people are actually interested.
Here is a map of the general area. Mt Patriarch is somewhere around the red circle on the left and Mt Altimarloch is near or in the circle on the bottom right. The river at the top is the Wairau and the river at the bottom is the Awatere, the road along the river leads is known as the Molesworth.
I have to apologize for the image quality. I am using a cell phone and it's been a overwhelmed by the brightness of the light.
It was only a short ride to the entry gate, we went via Taylor Pass. The road goes up steeply and winds its way along the edge of the mountain. It's pretty washed out in places and some of the ruts can be pretty deep. It goes up to 1680 metres, pretty much from sea level. I would call it an oversized hill, because it's nicely rounded off at the top. Here is a a picture form across the road from our house.
Here are the rest of the pictures. There were five of us going up.
Going back down was easier than expected, as we knew what was coming up.
This was only a short ride, 3 hours later we were at the local Biergarten enjoying some exotic beers.
The next ride will probably be out to the Tory channel entrance, that's the ferry entrance to the Marlborough Sounds.

Nice rides and a nice selection of bikes too ! (Try and find a X-Country or X-Challenge if you want another- or an extra bike, they are just soo much fun to ride at +/- 160 kgs wet weight !) | _________________ Gesendet vom mein Computer mit Tastatur. |

I just had to go out for a ride today. Luckily Basil started up after a bit of coaxing. Since it's been an overcast and somewhat cold day today, I put on a lot of layers, enough to be comfortable.
I headed across to Rarangi and on the way over, I spotted a nice little area near the river, perfect for playing around. Judging by the track, many before me had had the same idea. I will have to go back there as it's a good place to practice tight turns, sharp drops and steepish climbs. Nothing too serious though.
On a whim I decided that I would ride to Picton. The road had been freshly graded in most places, thankfully no traffic until the outskirts of Picton, where they were clearing the last of the slips. Thankfully, I did not meet any of the trucks earlier on. It took me a while to get into a rhythm, but soon I was cruising along at a reasonable pace.
A bit grey today, but still a nice ride.

Nice, not exactly R80 country. I've been through some pretty gnarly stuff with the Basic, but often had better things to do than to take photos. To be fair, there is now way I would take me my down hill through those trees.
The guy further down was on a DR650 and it got away from him, my bike is just parked.
This was just around the corner from the steep bit, no track here just a little orange triangle in the distance.
This was too technical for the Adventure, the Basic went ok through there.
As a matter of fact, the Adventure tired quickly.
I used to do a little bit of sand amongst trees
Not really technical, but clay has little traction
It all comes out in the wash
